Summer 2025 Courses in Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law

This summer, Southwestern Law School is proud to offer a dynamic series of courses focusing on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law. Designed to address some of today’s most pressing legal and social issues, these courses provide students with the opportunity to engage deeply with evolving areas of the law—both in the classroom and in practice.

The summer term runs from May 27 to July 24, 2025, with some courses meeting for the full term and others scheduled for only part of the summer. Students can choose from the following specialized offerings:

  • Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law
    This 2-unit course focuses on the basic doctrines such as decriminalization of sodomy, marriage equality, protections against discrimination and the rights of transgender people. The course will be offered virtually on Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:10-10:10 p.m. PST.
     
  • LGBTQI Youth in Systems of Care
    This 1-unit course focuses on the issues of LGBTQI youth in the delinquency and dependency systems. The course will be offered virtually on four Saturdays from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Zoom.
     
  • Asylum Law Clinic
    This 2-3 unit courses provides an overview of U.S. asylum and refugee law with a clinical component where students assist LGBTQI asylum seekers under the supervision of a highly experienced immigration law expert. The course will be offered only in an in-person format.
     
  • Reproductive Law and Surrogacy
    This 2-unit course exposes students to the issues involved with family formation utilizing surrogates, egg donors and sperm donors. Students will receive practical guidance on drafting various reproductive law documents such as surrogacy and egg donation contracts. The course will be offered virtually on Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. PST.
