Family Law Clinic Students Continued to Serve and Thrive

In fall 2020, students in the Family Law Clinic continued their work with attorneys at the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law. The 5 clinic students worked with more than 100 clients during the semester and did more than 1,000 combined hours of work on cases at the Center.

Although much of their work is still pending outcomes (family court can be a slow process especially during a pandemic), one student was instrumental in helping a client secure a restraining order from an abusive partner. Another student waded into statutes and case law and wrote a legal argument for why a low-income client should be granted relief from fees and then succeeded in having the relief granted. All students completed multiple days of intake interviews helping clients better understand their legal rights in family court. Students also drafted petitions for dissolution, property declarations, arguments for custody and visitation, and opinion letters to clients about their legal options.

Despite working in a remote environment, the Family Law Clinic continued to serve the community and achieve success.
