Director, Academy for Excellence in Law and Leadership

Southwestern Law School seeks the inaugural Director of its new Academy for Excellence in Law and Leadership. The Director of the Academy for Excellence in Law and Leadership will work directly with the President & Dean, other senior leaders, alumni, and students to implement and manage a multi-phase leadership program for law students.

The position starts on July 1, with the option to begin part-time and transition to full-time by September. The Director will join the Dean’s office team, reporting to the President & Dean. This full-time exempt role is based in Los Angeles and offers a hybrid work modality. This project is donor-funded for an initial three-year term.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Program Leadership: Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all Academy programs, including a leadership lecture series, book clubs, workshops, and capstone leadership projects.
  • Advising and Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to students participating in the Academy, including evaluating leadership inventories, reviewing reflecting papers, preparing applications and proposals, and offering professional development advice.
  • Event Coordination: Organize and manage Academy events, ensuring smooth logistics and engaging content. Coordination includes securing speakers, arranging rooms and food, coordinating publicity, tracking participation, facilitating interactive sessions, and hosting receptions.
  • Collaboration: Work with faculty co-directors, Southwestern staff, and alumni to plan and implement Academy activities and ensure the program is consistent with the law school’s mission and core values.
  • Administration: Manage the Academy's budget, maintain records, and prepare reports on program outcomes and impact.
  • Other Projects: Assist with related projects, including the annual book program and a potential summer accelerated trial advocacy program.

Qualifications

  • Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is required.
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience in advising students, preferably in a legal or academic setting.
  • Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Commitment: A passion for leadership development and a commitment to the values of Southwestern Law School.

Salary range: $95,000 to $115,000, depending on credentials and experience.
