Music for Film & Television

The use of musical compositions and sound recordings in films and television programs provides a significant source of revenue for music publishers and record companies. Although the use of music is ubiquitous in these platforms, the agreements that permit such use involve specialized negotiation and knowledge of numerous factors that dictate the scope and cost of the use.

This one-credit course trains students in the analysis of these factors, the clearance process of securing the synchronization rights to use specific musical compositions and the master recording rights to use specific sound recordings. Ancillary rights to use a musical composition or sound recording on a soundtrack album will also be analyzed.
