Negotiation Teams Take Third and Fifth Place at Competition

At the William and Mary School of Law International Law Negotiation Competition in Virginia, two teams from Southwestern placed in the top five. Vera Hovhannisyan and Rudolf Petrosyan took 3rd Place and Grace Kim and Sam Moriarty earned 5th place. They defeated teams from Georgetown University, University of Houston, and University of North Carolina. They also placed ahead of teams from American University, Charlotte School of Law, and University of Houston.

A total of 18 teams competed and prepared to represent clients in two different negotiations. A third team from Southwestern, Ricci Sergienko and Hannah Chung, performed impressively as well, prevailing in their rounds. The teams were coached by James Samson, Carshena Culmer, and Professor Cristina Knolton.

“This past weekend was incredible and I will forever remember it as one my best law school experiences. Our coaches truly put their hearts and souls into coaching our three teams,” Moriarty said. “The time and energy dedicated to sparring for the three weeks leading up to competing undoubtedly prepared us to face any team we went up against. I will carry the lessons I learned from this whole experience – including how to best represent my client’s interests to get a great deal, confidence, effective listening, and teamwork – with me beyond law school.”
