Join us on August 6th and 7th, 2020, for the inaugural webinar of the Judge Harry Pregerson Public Service Boot Camp.
Through “Harry’s Boot Camp,” students dedicated to public interest practice will be introduced to a cohort of like-minded lawyers at the outset of their studies at Southwestern and will receive a rapid survey of the public interest field, including legal services organizations and government lawyers engaged in critical legal advocacy.
The late Judge Harry Pregerson served on the federal bench as a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and then the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for a combined 50 years. Keynote: Judge Harry Pregerson: A Legacy of Service
The late Judge Harry Pregerson served on the federal bench as a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and then the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for a combined 50 years. This session will feature an overview of Judge Pregerson’s dedication to a life and career in public service and learning from his awe-inspiring example in increasing access to justice for all, human-centered perspectives on systems change, and forging the relationships in building stronger and collective advocacy to address systemic inequities.

Access to Justice: Addressing Economic and Racial Inequities in Practice
Recent crises in our nation’s history has placed the need for more passionate public service leaders in sharp relief and how to be thinking creatively to address current and continuing challenges. This panel will focus on introducing students to foundational concepts in public interest practice, the unique role and history respective agencies bring to the Los Angeles legal community, and the pro bono partnerships necessary in furthering the public interest, particularly as to the COVID-19 legal response and dialogue in dismantling economic and racial inequities.

Trauma-Informed Lawyering: Best Practices in Legal Services Delivery
An estimated 70-90% of U.S. adults have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime, such as a violent event or cyclical homelessness. Southwestern is thrilled to partner with Kobi Penland of Bet Tzedek Legal Services in presenting a training adapted for students on best practices in providing legal services through a trauma-informed lens.
Person-centered, trauma-informed (“PCTI”) training helps legal advocates understand how: (i) past trauma can impact clients’ approach both to receiving services and their current legal issues; (ii) to connect clients’ behaviors to trauma responses instead of character flaws or bias; and (iii) to prevent inadvertently retraumatizing those accessing needed legal services.

About Kobi Penland:
Kobi Penland is the Holocaust Survivors Justice Network Administrator (“HSJN”) and Person-Centered, Trauma-Informed (“PCTI”) Specialist for Bet Tzedek Legal Services in Los Angeles, and oversees the HSJN’s nationwide housing services and advance planning projects.
Additionally, Kobi develops all PCTI curriculum and trainings for HSJN pro bono attorneys, Bet Tzedek staff and summer law clerks, and attorneys participating in LA County’s Lawyers Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project. Kobi has taught several courses on the Holocaust at the University of Wyoming, including a module of the University’s Summer Semester Abroad in Israel.
Kobi holds a Master’s degree in Holocaust Studies from University College London and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Wyoming.
