#BisonVote - 2021 California Recall Election

Vote by Tuesday, September 14, 2021!

Confused over the upcoming recall election? Or, about the two-question ballot? Or, who the candidates even are? We get it. The California recall election on September 14th is not only unique but also extremely important.

BisonVote is here for you, and we’re answering the following questions:

  1. What two questions are on my ballot?
  2. Who are the 46 candidates?
  3. What does my vote do?
  4. What are the deadlines?
  5. How do I send back my vote?

What are the two questions on my ballot?

1) Should Gavin Newsom be recalled (removed from the office of Governor)?

2) If he is removed, who should replace him as Governor?

Who are the 46 candidates?

See the full list of candidates here.

Click here for an overview of the candidates and more info about their key messages.

What does my vote do?

If you vote NO:

If more than half of voters choose “no” on the recall question, Newsom remains in office.

If you vote YES:

If more than half of voters choose “yes,” Newsom will be replaced by the candidate who receives the highest number of votes (even if that candidate doesn’t have a majority of votes – can win as low as 20%).

What are the deadlines?

August 30, 2021, was the deadline to register and receive a mail ballot for the recall.

If you missed the August 30th deadline, eligible citizens may use the conditional registration process all the way through Election Day, available only at the County Registrar of Voters offices or a polling place to register and vote.

The last day to vote in the recall election is Tuesday, September 14, 2021.

How do I send back my vote?

You can put your ballot envelope into the mail with no stamp required, although it must be postmarked by September 14th to be counted.

You can also drop it off by 8 p.m. on September 14th to any official ballot box or polling place. In L.A. County, Vote Centers are open from now until Election Day!
