COVID-19 Update for Prospective Students

To all prospective students and applicants,

Thank you for your interest in Southwestern Law School! Whether you are just beginning to research your options for law school or have already applied to Southwestern, I’m sure you’re feeling lots of excitement about the journey you’ve embarked on. But I realize that you might also have some questions during this time of uncertainty. I’m writing to let you know what Southwestern has been doing to assure our community’s safety and wellbeing, as well as our determination to focus on our students and their goal of entering the legal profession.

Communication and Continuity. In the face of this new virus, we have been very closely monitoring developments and quickly adapting and keeping our community apprised through regular emails and a dedicated webpage. The week of March 9th, we announced to our students, who were on Spring Break, that we would be moving classes fully-online the week of March 16th, via Zoom videoconferencing. Students have had the benefit of extensive resources to transition to the online platform, as have our faculty. For some in our community, the transition has been super easy, given that we have already been successfully using online learning as integral parts of our part-time evening program.

Ready for Our 2020 Entering Students. We remain fully committed to a robust launch of both Period 1 in mid-June (for our 2020 entering class of 2-year J.D. students) and the August start of the fall semester for our 3- and 4-year J.D. students. In the event that precautionary measures remain necessary, we will be in touch with our matriculants about necessary and prudent measures that will assure teaching continuity while putting everyone’s safety and wellbeing first. In the meantime, enjoy learning about our students and our vibrant campus by exploring our virtual tour, and join in some of the optional experiences we’re offering.

Hope to See You Soon Online. Getting you educated about law school and having you meet fellow classmates and our faculty and staff remains a priority. So, we’ve moved our Admissions Office programming online. Check our Admissions Events Calendar and look for emails offering a variety of opportunities to you, including individual meetings and online events. We look forward to in-person gatherings when we are all back on our beautiful campus, but in the meantime, we are eager to be interacting with you through Zoom.

Continuity with Compassion. Continuing with our rigorous academics and our students’ learning remains a priority. But we also recognize that our students and entire community are living through an unprecedented situation, and so we’re working closely with everyone in the Southwestern community to assure their wellbeing. Given Southwestern’s thriving history for close to 110 years, qualities like grit, determination, flexible thinking, and a path-breaking spirit are in our DNA. I’m continually impressed by our remarkable staff and faculty for their dedication to our students and for their determination to pursue a positive path to help each student reach their goals. Even more, after nearly 7 years here now, I’m impressed by Southwestern students.

We are eager to acquaint you in person with our remarkable community, but because that’s not possible right now, we look forward to conversations and to your participation in programs via Zoom. So don’t hold back. If there’s something on your mind, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Admissions Office at or (213) 738-6834.
