Refining Your Legal Writing Skills* is designed to enhance legal writing and critical thinking skills, and thus help students become more competent and confident lawyers. Students will work on improving their writing and making thoughtful and strategic decisions about the rewriting process.
The course will consist of four lecture sessions and four individual meetings. At the outset, students must submit a portfolio consisting of their LAWS II brief with professor feedback and a reflection of their perceived strengths and weaknesses.
Each week, students will work on redrafting a piece of their first-year writing and will discuss their refined piece - the changes they made and why, and whether they need to further refine the piece. To test students' critical thinking, they may be given new facts and asked to rewrite an analysis section in light of the new facts.
Prerequisites: LAWS I (145A) and LAWS II (145AA, 145NG, or 145TP).
*Refining Your Legal Writing Skills is not open to students with a combined LAWS I & II grade of 3.00 or higher.
